Job Summary

Evaluates individual applications and benefits including complex case analysis requiring a high level of knowledge both medical and non medical, using appropriate guidelines to ensure rate classification is in line with corporate underwriting philosophy; assists in training and acts as mentor to underwriters; communicates with other insurers, agents and applicants; consults with chief underwriting officer, medical directors and reinsurers; provides advanced technical underwriting expertise within the company and to the agency force.

Essential Job Functions

Evaluates and classify individual applications and benefits up to $3,500 ,000. Refers applications over assigned authority limit to Chief Underwriting Officer or Underwriting Management for co-sign with recommendation for rating level or decline. Consults with medical director on those applications that, in the underwriter's judgement, require additional medical evaluation. Evaluates and classifies rate reconsideration, reinstatements, and other policy changes requiring underwriting approval. Understand compliance and regulatory landscape within the scope of underwriting. Assist in training of underwriters and other company representatives including development and presentation of case studies and relevant underwriting topics when requested. Develop strong collaboration and business relationships with internal and external customers. Determine when reinsurance involvement is nec essary and coordinate communications with reinsurance underwriters. Monitor insur ance industry underwriting practices through attendance of industry meeting and peer group interactions. Inform chief underwriter or underwriting management of any unusual or unexpected trends found during daily underwriting. Keep updated on ongoing relevant issues such as advances in clinical medicine, medical testing or financial tax regulations. Provide timely and professional communications to internal and external customers. Participate in case design providing underwriting input to advanced sales unit when requested. Proactively increase agents knowledge of individual insurance concepts especially with their high net worth clientele. Accesses and utilizes the on-line administration system and other electronic medical resources to obtain information necessary for u nderwriting. Reports appropriate information to the Medical Information Bureau and maintains confidentially of un derwriting records in accordance with established procedure, Fair Credit Reporting Act , and state regulations. Reviews EKG's and refers abnormal tracings to the medical director for evaluation. Reviews contestable death claims and evaluates for possible material misrepresentation. Audits senior underwriter and underwriter decisions for quality control as directed by the supervisor. Attends agent meetings and provides technical advice and assistance; conducts educational clinics for agents and other Company personnel as directed by the supervisor. Maintains correspondence with agency force, applicants, policyholders, and other insurers by telephone, letter, e-mail or in person. Performs other duties as assigned. Promotes safety at all times and complies with safety/ergonomic standards as outlined in relevant company published manuals. Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Actions

Required job duties are essentially sedentary work consisting of occasional walking, standing and lifting and/or carrying 10-lbs. maximum and seeing.

Physical Environment

Required job duties are normally performed in a climate-controlled office environment.

Education Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Attainment of FLMI and/or FALU designation.

Experience Requirements

Six years of Life Underwriting experience, including at least 2 years as a Life Underwriting Specialist I (or comparable experience)

Special Skill Requirement

PC literate with understanding of Microsoft Office products and good keyboarding skills.
