Job Summary

Leads and manages the Commercial Underwriting team across a multi-state region, ensuring compliance with state-specific guidelines. Accountable for growth and profitability of the assigned book of business and territory. Oversees risk evaluation and decisions on acceptance, modification, or rejection to achieve territorial and industry objectives. Drives strategies for profitable growth, retention, and market penetration while delivering exceptional service to agents and policyholders. Provides leadership support as needed across the team.

Directs and manages a team of underwriters handling complex or irregular cases. Oversees risk selection, underwriting quality, and operational efficiency while fostering collaboration and business growth. Ensures compliance with authority levels, develops staff capabilities, and drives strategies for profitability and resource optimization.

  • Lead Underwriting Team: Provide guidance, coaching, and mentoring to underwriters, ensuring technical expertise and adherence to authority levels.
  • Risk Selection & Approval: Review and approve risks within authority; escalate complex cases with recommendations for pricing and coverage.
  • Portfolio Management: Monitor existing business performance, analyze loss trends, and implement strategies to improve profitability and combined ratios.
  • Operational Efficiency: Optimize processes, manage operating costs, and ensure timely, accurate underwriting for new business, renewals, and endorsements.
  • Agency & Business Development: Build relationships with agents, develop agency-specific growth plans, and promote collaboration across teams to drive profitable production.

Physical Actions

Work is performed in-person at a Farmers office or virtually at an approved location. Environment is indoors, climate-controlled, with normal office distractions (background noise, chatter, interruptions).
  • Sitting: Frequently for extended periods, up to a full shift.
  • Movement: Occasionally walks, navigates stairs/ramps, and uneven surfaces.
  • Lifting: Occasionally moves or lifts up to 25 lbs without assistance.
  • Manual Tasks: Frequently uses arms, hands, and fingers for equipment and fine motor tasks (typing, mousing, writing).
  • Posture: Rarely bends, stoops, kneels, twists, or reaches overhead/below knees.
  • Vision: Clear vision (with/without correction) for reading and verifying information; depth and peripheral vision for navigation.
  • Hearing: Adequate hearing (with/without correction) for communication, alarms, and safety.
  • Travel: 10-15%

Education Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent required. Bachelors degree preferred. Insurance industry designation achieved, or completion of three sections from CPCU courses 500/510, 520 or 551, 552.

Experience Requirements

Five or more years commercial multi-line underwriting experience. Prior leadership experience.

Results-driven insurance professional with extensive expertise in commercial underwriting, risk selection, and pricing strategies. Skilled in interpreting policy language and applying technical knowledge to ensure profitable growth and compliance. Adept at building strong agency relationships, influencing stakeholders, and delivering effective presentations. Brings a deep understanding of insurance laws, regulatory requirements, and market practices, combined with advanced analytical skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office tools. Recognized for accuracy under pressure, adaptability in dynamic environments, and ability to coach and develop high-performing teams.
