Head of Product Line Management - Business Insurance

Reporting to the Head of Business Insurance Product Management, the Head of Product Line Management is accountable for line management of countrywide commercial products; responsible for profit & loss (P&L) and segmentation strategy for Commercial Multi-Peril, Umbrella, Commercial Auto, and Workers Compensation. This role oversees market and product pricing strategies for profitable growth initiatives across all commercial lines.

Essential Job Functions

As Head of Product Line Management, you will:

  • Establish countrywide product and pricing direction, conduct rate structure and competitor analysis including financial benchmarking, and direct a staff of Line of Business Directors who work collaboratively with State Product Management, Sales, Underwriting, and Service to meet stated product goals and service standards.
  • Meet all commercial lines top and bottom-line growth goals countrywide; oversee the team responsible for long and short-range pricing strategies including rate segmentation, third-party data integration, pricing sophistication, performance monitoring, and market intelligence.
  • Perform executive level reporting on all lines of business on a monthly basis.
  • Drive long-term line of business strategies through deep understanding and analysis of P&L drivers at the portfolio management, LOB, and industry levels. Establish key performance indicators for success, monitor countrywide performance, and regularly report and present results to key stakeholders and senior leadership.
  • Partner with other product leaders to develop product lines, establish countrywide pricing targets, and build line of business strategies aligned with desired business outcomes. Work with Actuarial to plan and establish countrywide pricing strategies that create growth opportunities while maintaining necessary profit margins.
  • Recruit, develop, train, and supervise a team responsible for financial line management for commercial lines. Act as a people strategist, realigning centers with trained staff, designing capacity models and retention strategies, and developing future leaders and technical talent.

Measures of Success

Within the first 12 months, a successful candidate will have achieved the following:

  • Established countrywide commercial product performance baselines across all lines of business; implemented pricing strategies and portfolio management initiatives that demonstrate measurable progress against growth and profitability targets.
  • Built and deployed an operational framework for rate segmentation, pricing sophistication, and competitive positioning that enables data-informed decision-making and positions the company competitively in the marketplace.
  • Developed a team with clear accountabilities, capability roadmaps, and retention strategies. Identified and developed high-potential leaders for future advancement.
  • Provide regular and direct product updates to ensure the product organization challenges conventional thinking and brings measurable value to customers. These interactions inform strategic product decisions, align pricing and portfolio strategies with corporate objectives, and ensure the commercial product function operates at the forefront of market trends and competitive dynamics.

Education Requirements

Candidates should reflect the following professional qualifications and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in business management, mathematics, management information systems, finance, actuarial science, economics, or other analytics-related field). Master's degree preferred.
  • 10 or more years of related experience in P&C insurance or comparable financial management roles.
  • Strong product knowledge of Commercial Lines P&C products. Demonstrated P&L management experience and line of business ownership on either a territorial or countrywide basis.
  • Technical aptitude and proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). SaaS and SQL abilities preferred. Technical expertise in insurance products, underwriting rules, and rating.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, and develop a team. Experience with strategic planning, financial analysis, and cross-functional collaboration.
