As a Life Actuary (FSA) you will initiate and drive actuarial analysis, coordinating and advocating recommendations for implementing changes due to regulatory and management reporting requirements.  Opportunities exist in reserving, pricing and analysis, depending on interest and business need.  A Life Actuary (FSA) is a coach to the broader team.

Essential Job Functions

  • Initiates, analyzes, recommends and implements appropriate revisions in actuarial methods and assumptions in areas with significant financial impact. 
  • Works independently to develop and implement appropriate solutions to actuarial issues. 
  • Acts as project lead, assigning project work, managing workflow and providing feedback to leadership to enable appropriate modifications to and timely completion of projects. 
  • Directs the preparation of reports and financial projections to provide leadership with information needed to monitor and evaluate the impact of business decisions on profits.
  • Represents the business unit through participation in inter-departmental meetings and committees. 
  • Analyzes operations to recommend improvement for control and/or efficiency. 
  • Designs and conducts training and development of professional actuarial personnel to maintain efficient and accurate completion of projects. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Actions

This role, whether performed virtually or in an office setting, will include normal and customary distractions, noise, and interruptions. Sits or stands for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift. Occasionally reaches overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping. Occasionally moves, lifts, carries, and places objects and supplies weighing 0-10 pounds without assistance. Listens to, interprets, and differentiates auditory information (example others speaking) at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Visually verifies and reads information. Visually locates material, resources and other objects. Ability to continuously operate a computer for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift. Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate keyboard and other office equipment up to a full work shift.

Physical Environment

This position operates in an open office working environment which will include normal and customary distractions, noise, and interruptions.

Education Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required. Fellow of the Society of Actuaries or equivalent required.  Member of the American Academy of Actuaries a plus.
  • Maintains continuing education requirements in order to sign public statements of actuarial opinion.

Experience Requirements

  • At least five years of actuarial experience, preferably including managerial experience.
  • A working knowledge of any of the following reporting bases: US Statutory, IFRS 17, Market Consistent Embedded Value (MCEV)

Additional Qualification

  • Effective leadership skills. Lead through change by driving strategy in ambiguous situations.
  • Excellent collaboration and team building skills. Experience working with business stakeholders to identify and implement enhancements to tools and processes.

Candidate qualifications may be reviewed against the requirements for the associated levels of this position's core function. Salary grade will be based on selected candidates' experience and skills.


  • Farmers offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, qualifications and location.
    o CA Only: $145,440 - $210,700
    o CO Only: $136,400 - $181,800 
    o New York City, NY/Westchester County: $168,560 - $210,700 
    o WA Only:  $145,440 - $194,500
