Job Summary

Works on strategy formulation projects and the development of initiatives for achieving operational excellence, innovation excellence and growth. Analyzes internal and external data to help define problems, assess business cases and identify opportunities. Assists in the design and articulation of business solutions. Presents findings, conclusions and recommendations. To fulfill this role, performs internal and external analyses to assist in developing a clear understanding of corporate strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Summarizes the insights gained and develops actionable recommendations for capitalizing on corporate strengths and opportunities, while mitigating weaknesses and threats. Gathers and analyzes data on the insurance and financial services industries, focusing mainly on the markets and customer segments in which Farmers chooses to do business. Ensures that the scope of this research includes both Farmers’ competitors and selected best-in-class companies against which its performance will be benchmarked. Helps assess implications of research to identify strategic imperatives. Packages and presents findings to senior staff members, working with them to craft winning business strategies. Creates roadmaps for driving these strategies down to a portfolio of specific strategic initiatives. Develops performance metrics for measuring strategy execution and delivery of expected benefits. Applies critical thinking skills and structured problem-solving techniques to design new solutions for optimizing business improvement opportunities. Conducts and/or coordinates industry, competitor and market research integral to the ongoing internal and external analyses of Farmers and its operating environment. Focuses on external benchmarking (Farmers’ performance v. competitors and best-in-class companies in other industries). In addition to market research, provides and continuously improves the underlying data gathering & analysis tools, metrics and methods needed to support informed decision-making.

Essential Job Functions

  • Conducts primary and secondary research on: the insurance industry competitors and best-in-class benchmark companies market and customer segments.
  • Assists more senior/experienced members of the Strategic planning Group in managing multiple projects across business units, from structuring the problem, articulating the key hypotheses, guiding data collection, driving the analyses, managing timelines/deliverables, communicating progress and facilitating senior dialogue, to crafting and getting buy- in for recommendations and changes.
  • Applies structured techniques and tools to analyze business problems and opportunities, formulating and testing hypotheses to guide and economize data gathering.
  • Uses research to uncover insights leading to proposed solutions, refined through further research and analysis, targeted to support rapid iteration.
  • Identifies new opportunities to add value both within and beyond the scope of formal projects.
  • Leverages corporate data and research resources and collaborates with the businesses, Finance, IT, etc.
  • Strengthens existing relationships with Strategic Planning Group customers and cultivates new ones.
  • Participates in cross-functional teams engaged in special projects or critical initiatives.
  • Mentors individuals and work groups in disciplines such as project management, Critical Thinking Skills & Six Sigma.
  • Ensures effective communication of strategic business perspectives and related business value.
  • Creates/adapts templates for presenting research, findings, conclusions, recommendations and status in clear and concise formats.
  • Designs distinctive Strategic Planning Group and/or research products that enhance credibility and, build and maintain the group’s internal brand equity.
  • Facilitates the strategic business planning process, working with management personnel to identify opportunities for new strategic initiatives and improvement in current processes.
  • Offers practical solutions and identifies the resources needed to execute change.
  • Measures effectiveness and monitors progress of business teams charged with implementing strategic initiatives.
  • Verifies use of best practices in the design and execution of initiatives, as well as effective use of appropriate change management throughout the lifecycle, including execution and delivery of results.
  • Verifies use of best practices in the design of sample plans; the conduct and analysis of surveys & focus group interactions; trending, tracking and benchmarking and, results reporting.
  • Assures the use of appropriate databases, search engines, primary & secondary sources, analytical tools and statistical models.
  • Promotes safety at all times and complies with safety/ergonomic standards as outlined in company manuals.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Actions

Required job duties are essentially sedentary work consisting of occasional walking, standing and lifting and/or carrying 10-lbs. maximum and seeing.

Physical Environment

Required job duties are normally performed in a climate- controlled office environment. May be minimal travel associated with regular job duties, entailing additional physical demands connected with such activities.

Education Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Master’s degree in Business Administration (marketing or research focus) preferred.

Experience Requirements

Minimum of 3–5 years of post-Bachelor’s/graduate degree consulting work experience in insurance, at a management strategy consulting firm, or in the research function of an insurance industry market research/analytics company. Proven track record in managing staff and multiple projects

Special Skill Requirement

  • Experience working on quantitative & qualitative business solutions projects
  • 3-4 years of experience analyzing, designing or implementing large-scale business solutions
  • Experience building business cases (financial/ROI analysis experience helpful but not required)
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively and resourcefully uncover unusual primary & secondary sources
  • Experience conducting targeted Internet searches MS Word, Excel, & PowerPoint, with demonstrated proficiency creating & delivering presentations
  • High energy level, with a passion for providing excellent service to both internal & external customers
  • Enthusiastic self-starter, who prefers a fast-paced, dynamic/fluid work environment
  • Ability to consistently make good decisions by applying analysis, experience and sound judgment

  • CO Only: The pay range for this job being performed in CO would be $81,100 - $108,000
