Job Summary
Essential Job Functions
- Accepts, modifies or rejects larger premium, complex risks up to $100,000.
- Reviews business relating to loss experience, inspection reports, file information, policyholder tenure, related policies, and nature of risk in accordance with company guidelines, standards and compliance with state laws.
- Provides documentation for any exceptions and critical account information relating to the final underwriting decision.
- Verifies coverage eligibility.
- Interprets policy contract language and uses approved classification systems, rating plans and selection standards to determine eligibility, desirability and proper pricing.
- Evaluates unprofitable books of business, agents or districts and analyzes competitive information to provide recommendations to product development.
- Advises leadership of weakness in coverage and products that are impacting growth potential.
- Assists in developing plans to improve profitability.
- Evaluates and handles reinstatement policies to determine eligibility.
- Provides technical assistance to customers regarding coverage interpretations, policy and endorsement provisions, and underwriting acceptability for coverage.
- Evaluates new business and re-evaluates existing policies to enhance the quality and maintain proper rate class administration to fund losses and contribute to profitability.
- Reviews transactions and processes referrals not within the authority of other team members.
- Provides support in a mentoring role to others, providing underwriting philosophy, guidance and training on transactions that exceed team member authority levels.
- Utilizes advanced level competency to educate VIP agencies on products, services, automation, and underwriting standards as well as sales and cross selling techniques to promote accomplishment of our corporate goals.
- Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with agencies to further understand the external marketplace and underwrites within established performance standards and priorities that are responsive to marketing, underwriting, retention and service goals.
- Conducts regular field visits to create new business opportunities.
- Participates in territory rate review meetings and state strategy calls, providing insight and recommendations to address rate need and rate fatigue, where appropriate.
- May conduct Team Underwriting Reviews (TURs) to ensure quality and appropriate discretionary pricing.
- Manages territory CAT exposures to wildfire, wind-hail, and other catastrophe exposures.
- Entrusted with increased authority to make decisions on high risk properties and assist their leadership team with the territory CAT management strategy.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent. Bachelors degree.
- CPCU or other related professional designations preferred ie CIC, AU, ARM.
Experience Requirements
- 3+ years of experience commercial multi-line underwriting.
