Workplace: Hybrid or Remote Depending on location

Our hybrid work environment combines the best of both worlds with at least three (3) days in office and up to two (2) days virtual for employees who live within fifty (50) miles of a Farmers corporate office. This position is to be a member of the Property and Casualty Group, who provide advice and counsel throughout the Farmers® organization in the areas of product development, policy forms, underwriting, rating, regulatory, and general business advice. California experience preferred but not required. 

Job Summary

Coordinates and oversee in-house and outside counsel; monitors all legal matters within the assigned division pertaining to Farmers Group, Incorporated and subsidiary and managed entities; monitors reporting procedures and requirements; and maintains the Corporate Legal case management system.

Essential Job Functions

  • Monitors all legal matters related to the Farmers Group of Companies within the assigned division.
  • Provides regular reports regarding the status of cases to the assigned division head.
  • Monitors compliance by the staff on report procedures and requirements.
  • Provides advice, guidance, and strategy regarding corporate legal matters as assigned.
  • Maintains and monitors computerized case management system.
  • Researches and prepares legal memoranda and opinions on specialized questions of policy coverage and legal liability. 
  • Based on assigned Corporate Legal division, furnishes advice and opinions on the specialized legal aspects of: Labor and Agency; Property and Casualty; Corporate Secretarial, or Life company legal matters including corporate transactions and corporate secretarial matters, and makes appearances before various tribunals in respect thereto.
  • Identifies and reports to the division head on areas and problems which are systemic and may give rise to exposure to the Companies.
  • Conducts legal research and drafts points, authorities, and briefs.
  • Manages specialized legal problems regarding subsidiary companies.
  • Based on the assigned division: manages appeals of litigated cases (researches, prepares briefs, and argues at hearings on appeals); and assists trial attorneys on matters of procedure and substantive law including pleadings, discovery matters, and policy coverage questions; manages labor and agency matters; Life company matters; Commercial matters; regulatory or P&C matters.
  • Manages special assignments as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Actions

Job is performed in-person at a Farmers office or virtually at an approved alternative work location. Job may include work performed at field locations. The physical work environment is indoors and climate-controlled with adequate lighting and ventilation. Normal and customary distractions include background noise produced by office equipment and chatter among people, as well as interruptions. Field work performed outdoors may include exposure to weather elements. Frequently sits or stands for prolonged periods of time, up to a full shift. Occasionally moves about the workplace including navigating stairs, ramps, and level or uneven surfaces. Occasionally moves, pushes, pulls, lifts, carries, and places objects or materials weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Frequently uses shoulders, arms, hands, and fingers to manipulate equipment, tools, and objects necessary to perform job duties. Frequently performs fine motor tasks such as typing, mousing, or writing, up to a full shift. Occasionally performs movements such as bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, twisting, and reaching overhead or below the knees. Possesses clear vision, with or without correction, to visually read and verify information. Relies on depth perception and peripheral vision to navigate the work environment visually by identifying barriers, changes in terrain and locating objects. Possesses adequate hearing, with or without correction, to communicate with co-workers, respond promptly to auditory signals or alarms, and discern sounds essential for maintaining safety and productivity in the workplace. Jobs in this category may require regular travel between Farmers offices, alternative work locations, and/or field locations.

Physical Environment

Required job duties are normally performed in a climate- controlled office environment with some exposure to uncontrolled outside environmental conditions and travel via automobile and/or commercial transportation.

Education Requirements

Juris Doctor LLB or JD degree required and membership in any state Bar, and completion of review or seminar courses in corporate law and associated fields; as well as meet all MCLE rules and regulations.

Experience Requirements

Minimum 6 years experience as an attorney in the field of corporate law and/or litigation and related experience in areas of responsibility.

 

Preferred experience:

  • Experience working with insurance policies
  • Experience with regulatory matters/working with regulatory bodies
