Job Summary

Provides data modeling services (exploratory and predictive modeling) for line(s) of business and/or shared service functions. Works on end to end solutions as an individual contributor and as part of the project team, starting with partnering with business leaders to identify project opportunities and clarify modeling requirements. Conceives and designs complex and innovative analytic models both that include traditional and contemporary data mining technologies, applied to both structured and unstructured data sets. Responsible for pulling and cleaning datasets, building and testing the models, and presenting results to internal teams and business leaders to demonstrate the business value of each project.

What You'll Do

  • Leads the design, build and test/validate process for quantitative models (descriptive, predictive, optimization/simulation and others) built using a variety of modeling techniques.
  • Models are used to predict activities or events within the lines of business such as fraud, subrogation, underwriting outcomes, retention rate, conversion rate, efficiency gain, etc.
  • The modeling results could be presented to end users as reports, scorecards, dashboards, web applications or be implemented directly into the line of business workflow with an automated process.
  • Partners with business leaders to identify project opportunities and clarify modeling requirements, including understanding who will use the potential solution and how it fits into the business process.
  • Presents modeling results to business leaders and discusses interpretation and application of using the model.
  • Performs research and development on new modeling algorithms, modeling concepts or technical tools to find applicability to Farmers projects.
  • Presents results to the senior leadership team and recommends whether researched items should be added to the Farmers Analytics toolkit.
  • Leads team meetings, knowledge sharing and individual learning activities.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

What You'll Bring

  • 5-7 years as Data Scientist or related technical role in a delivery oriented environment required.
  • Experience within the insurance industry and insurance data preferred.

Education You'll Need

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Masters degree in statistics, operations research or other quantitative analytical field preferred.

Additional Qualifications

  • Mastery and ability to use advanced statistical / Machine Learning concepts, including: regression, GLMs, decision trees, ensemble modeling, clustering, SVM, etc.
  • Expert proficiency of at least one statistical/modeling packages (Python, R, Dell-Statistica, etc).
  • Expert proficiency in data management programming SQL and PL-SQL.
  • Must be well-organized, have strong written and oral communication skills, and be able to present to senior executives.
  • Lead Projects from a technical standpoint using strong CRISP-DM methodology. 

Physical Actions

Sits or stands for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift. Occasionally reaches overhead and below the knees, including bending, twisting, pulling, and stooping. Occasionally moves, lifts, carries, and places objects and supplies weighing 0-10 pounds without assistance. Listens to, interprets, and differentiates auditory information (e.g. others speaking) at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Visually verifies and reads information. Visually locates material, resources and other objects. Ability to operate a computer for extended periods of time, up to a full work shift. Physical dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively to operate keyboard and other office equipment up to a full work shift.

Physical Environment

This position operates in an open office working environment which will include normal and customary distractions, noise, and interruptions.
