Data Analyst/Data Engineer

Job Summary

Provide data in response to one-time or recurring requests and build robust analytical tools for business reporting and analysis. Understand customer objectives and processes; effectively communicate system capabilities and limitations; and deliver available data. Analyze data quality and take corrective action. Analyze impact of system changes to data/reporting infrastructure (support testing and implementation activities).

Essential Job Functions

•    Create and maintain ETL data pipelines
•    Query relational database management systems (e.g., MS SQL, Snowflake) to assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional / non-functional business requirements.
•    Create and maintain analytical tools to provide actionable insights using various key business performance metrics.
•    Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
•    Test, review, and audit databases to ensure data quality meets compliance standards.
•    Effectively communicate the capabilities, limitations, and potential value of data and tools to relevant stakeholders.
•    Provide clear documentation for delivered solutions and processes.
•    Develop in-depth knowledge of data associated with at least one line of business (LOB), and effectively support the data needs of that LOB.
•    Stay current with and adopt new tools and applications to ensure high quality and efficient solutions.
•    Exemplify good teamwork, collaborating effectively across functions.
•    Possess the project management skills necessary to complete assignments effectively and efficiently, demonstrating accountability to management and customers for meeting deadlines

Physical Actions

• Essentially sedentary work consisting of occasional walking, standing, and lifting/carrying 10 lbs. maximum • Functional ability of seeing, hearing and speaking • Ability to type proficiently

Physical Environment

• Work in a climate-controlled office, with occasional travel by car or airplane

Education Requirements

•    High school diploma or equivalent required.
•    Bachelor’s degree or higher in a technical discipline (Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, etc.) preferred. 

Experience Requirements

• Internal Candidates: (Preferred) 2+ years of Farmers or other insurance claims experience. Technical experience that involves querying and manipulating data to address business problems. • External Candidates: 2+ years experience with data extraction, manipulation and presentation in usable format

Special Skill Requirement

•    Experience writing and optimizing advanced SQL queries in a business environment with large-scale, complex datasets.
•    Coding proficiency in at least one modern programming language (Python, Java, etc.).
•    Ability to write VBA macros for Microsoft Office products and advanced proficiency in Excel (Pivot Tables, Pivot Charts, AutoFilter, and formulas).
•    Ability to perform basic statistical analysis preferred.
•    Disposition for data detective work is a must; ability to look at data and identify patterns, problems, and analysis opportunities.
•    Strong data visualizations skills; experience with Power BI helpful.
•    Good communication skills, including the ability to express complicated technical concepts verbally and in writing to a variety of audiences. 
•    Experience working independently and with others in a team environment. 
•    Ability to adapt to new or changing direction. 
•    Motivated and self-directed - will seek out answers rather than waiting to be told what to do.


  • Farmers offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, qualifications and location
  • CO Only: The pay range for this job being performed in Colorado would be $72,000 – 96,000
