Job Summary

Responsible for leading the development of new Yacht product features to include the construction of appropriate policy language, required coverages, and corresponding rating structure. Implements initiatives and also owns delivery capabilities that support consistent, accurate underwriting functions necessary to achieve company financial goals such as growth, profitability and ease of doing business targets. Accountable for core underwriting functions and serves as an expert in system rules, legal & compliance issues, underwriting authority, underwriting appetite guidelines, and underwriting process flow. Helps identify and manage relationships with Yacht Specialist agencies to drive profitable new business growth and maintain renewal retention.  This role will evolve into a People Leader position over time to build out a high-performing Yacht Underwriting team.

Essential Tasks

  • Responsible for designing, implementing, and helping monitor Yacht product features.
  • Develops short term and long-term plans for assigned products and product features.
  • Develops and manages business processes, creating improvements in underwriting efficiency, quality and/or productivity, cost reductions, competitive bench marking, organization analysis and customer service improvements.
  • Participates and/or leads national projects/programs to substantially impact premium growth, expense reduction and/or profit improvement. 
  • Initiates, monitors and recommends national validation programs to reduce underwriting leakage. 
  • Monitors, controls and evaluates the efficiency of the underwriting business rules engine, identifying new rules to support profitable growth and ensure proper rating of new and existing business. 
  • Ensures compliance within the underwriting process. 
  • Initiates, evaluates, recommends and implements outside investigation tools to validate information while increasing the return on the tools used. 
  • Manages several functions including underwriting quality, post-issuance validation, referrals and underwriting authority levels. 
  • Evaluates, recommends and implements customer selection guidelines to support policy growth while protecting profitability. 
  • Participates in the development of written personal lines insurance policy contracts to be underwritten by the company; coordinates with Underwriting, Actuarial, Claims, Corporate Legal, Corporate Communications and State Filings to create and/or revise personal lines insurance contracts.
  • Collaborates closely with other stakeholders such as Loss Control, Service, Distribution, Product, Claims, IT and/or Underwriting centers. 
  • Recommends contract improvements by making presentations and proposals as requested and responds to questions from Claims or Legal members of the committee. 
  • Routinely conducts competitive analysis on contractual forms and underwriting guidelines identifying areas of opportunity for new products and underwriting best practices.  
  • Stays current on industry knowledge and makes relevant recommendations that may impact lines of business. 
  • Performs other functions as assigned.

First Year Success Factors

  • Successfully Design and Launch Yacht Product Enhancements: Completes an assessment of the current Yacht product portfolio within the first 90-120 days. 
  • Improve Underwriting Profitability and Quality: Establishes expertise in underwriting appetite, authority levels, referral processes, and business rules. 
  • Drive Profitable Growth Through Agency Partnerships: Builds strong relationships with key Yacht Specialist agencies.
  • Optimize Underwriting Processes and Systems: Evaluates underwriting workflows and system capabilities. 
  • Establish Thought Leadership in Yacht Underwriting: Becomes the organization's subject matter expert for Yacht underwriting. 
  • Build and Develop a High-Performing Yacht Underwriting Team:  Creates the organizational structure, hiring plan, and talent strategy for the future Yacht Underwriting team.

Education & Career Experience Requirements

  • High School diploma required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. 
  • 2+ years of proven experience in a similar underwriting and agency management leadership role preferred.
  • 7+ years of Yacht Underwriting and Agency Management experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a track record of managing, developing, and leading high-performing teams.

Physical Actions

Required job duties are essentially sedentary work consisting of occasional walking, standing and lifting and/or carrying 10-lbs. maximum and seeing, hearing, reaching, pulling, speaking, reading and writing.

Physical Environment

Required job duties are normally performed in a climate- controlled office environment.
