Job Summary 
 
Overall responsibility for driving both top and bottom line Business Insurance Underwriting results for a given regional zone. Development and support of business unit and strategic plan while executing the local market tactical initiatives for underwriting strategies set by Home Office. This includes but not limited to the Profitability, Stability, Relationships and Growth plans of those Territories supported by the assigned Underwriting centers.
 
Essential Job Functions
 
Establish the strategic direction for the Business Insurance operations:
  • Determine the value proposition and brand positioning for underwriting in each of the states and key intra-state markets
  • Determine underwriting appetite, product structure, and pricing approach
  • Collaborate with Distribution to build the agency marketing approach related to Business Insurance
  • Drive innovation and new business capabilities throughout territory and underwriting centers
Accountable for the financial results (Premium and Profit) for the Business Insurance underwriting operations:
  • Create the financial plan for each market
  • Establish a tactical plan to achieve all financial objectives for underwriting
  • Ensure the execution of all underwriting tactical initiatives through direct leadership of over 250 Business Insurance employees and collaboration with stakeholders across the Farmers enterprise
  • In collaboration with Farmers Distribution leadership team; Develop sales plans, agency compensation plans, conduct field visits with key agents, promote Business Insurance to external audiences, etc.
  • Lead the development and roll-out of new products and capabilities to improve growth and profit
  • Develop Transactional Cost & drive margin management
  • Create, identify, and implement operational efficiencies within underwriting centers
  • Drive operational consistency across the underwriting center and business unit
  • Sets direction around rate level and pricing approach for all products in the marketplace
  • Works with Compliance and Regulatory Affairs to ensure Business Insurance meets all regulatory goals for underwriting
  • Establish an environment that promotes teamwork, camaraderie & employee retention
Lead the Underwriting function for Business Insurance operations:
  • Develop underwriting appetite and guidelines
  • Establish and execute team training strategy
  • Establish and monitor underwriting standards
  • Monitor new and renewal business trends; take action to improve overall financial results
  • Oversee complex account referral process 

Lead the Agent and Customer servicing functions for Business Insurance operations:

  • Establish appropriate service level standards
  • Manage NPS and Customer Experience initiatives
  • Execute local billing and Premium Audit strategy
  • Develop and deliver service SLAs to match agent expectations
Primary Business Insurance liaison for Sales & Distribution efforts impacting the Business Insurance operations:
  • Develop local sales strategy, territory planning and goal setting for underwriting centers
  • Responsible for Agent participation and engagement initiatives
  • Deliver agent engagement summits and underwriting open house initiatives
  • Conducts agent training for Business Insurance and underwriting
  • Business SME for agent management and support
  • Business lead on agent incentive programs and execution
  • Develops Agency and field Communication
  • Assists with relationship management for District Managers, Agents and licensed staff
  • Industry and Market expert for Distribution
Education Requirements 
  • Four year college degree
  • Insurance education such as CPCU or related courses
Experience Requirements 
  • 3-5 years leadership experience with large operations
  • 5-10 years Business Insurance industry experience with underwriting and/or field management experience
  • Experience managing/developing a senior group of managers, underwriters and operations personnel.
Special Skill Requirement 
  • Role requires a thorough comprehension of business insurance underwriting and its key disciplines and processes including insurance products, coverage's, underwriting guidelines, servicing needs, etc.
  • Must be skilled and knowledgeable in relationship management and communication with key business executives.
  • Must demonstrate entrepreneurial business skills to grow/retain profitable business and create a learning environment for Business Insurance employees
