Job Summary 
  • This role can be Remote, as well as Bellevue, WA and Columbus, OH
Responsible for profitable growth of the Farmers Life insurance business through proper selection, classification and pricing of risks within assigned territory/industry. Independently evaluates individual applications and benefits requiring a high level of knowledge both medical and non medical, using appropriate guidelines to ensure rate classification is in line with corporate underwriting philosophy. Strong communication skills with agents and applicants; provides technical underwriting expertise within the company and to the agency force. Establishes collaborative relationships with Agencies to understand the external marketplace and underwrites within established performance standards and priorities that are responsive to marketing, underwriting, retention and service goals. Evaluates Life business for risk acceptability - matching price to risk exposure to profitability 
Essential Job Functions 
Evaluate, interpret, affect, classify, bind and act on individual applications and benefits. Given authority to approve all individual life application products and benefits, within the authority limits of the position, as assigned by the supervisor (up to $1,000,00). Provides technical assistance to internal and external customers regarding coverage interpretations, policy and endorsement provisions, and underwriting acceptability for Life Insurance coverage. Proactively provides agent's with key Underwriting knowledge of individual insurance concepts. Effectively communicates decisions and resolves agent and customer concerns promptly. Includes effective communication through phone calls and email to gather and analyze necessary information critical to the underwriting process. Refers applications over assigned approval limit, with recommendation for review and final action, to the Underwriting Management for co-sign. Verifies coverage eligibility. Evaluates and classifies rate reconsideration, reinstatements, and other policy changes requiring underwriting approval. Interprets policy contract language/forms and uses approved classification systems, rating plans and selection standards to determine eligibility, desirability and proper classification/pricing.

Required job duties are essentially sedentary work consisting of occasional walking, standing, and lifting, and/or carrying 
Physical Environment 
Required job duties are normally performed in a climate-controlled office environment. 
Education Requirements 
High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Attainment of and/or actively pursuing FLMI and FALU designations. 
Experience Requirements 
Minimum one year of Life Underwriting experience, including one year as an Life Underwriter (or similar experience). Experience Underwriting complex cases, including Financial Underwriting  
Special Skill Requirement 
Knowledge of management information and business systems (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with demonstrated presentation skills Understand compliance and regulatory landscape within the scope of underwriting. Develop strong collaboration and business relationships with internal and external customers and agents, providing customer service that meets or exceeds service level standards. Keep updated on ongoing relevant issues such as advances in clinical medicine or medical testing. Technical expertise in Life Insurance risk selection and pricing. Ability to read and interpret policy contract language. Must be detail oriented and accurate; demonstrate organizational skills and flexibility; ability to perform general mathematical calculations; ability to work in a fast paced environment be team oriented and have a consistent commitment to excellence. Analytical thinking skills to make timely, appropriate decisions and recommendations after reviewing all relevant information.
