Farmers is hiring an experienced telematics Data Scientist to advance our insurance pricing sophistication. The role involves using smartphone and connected car data to benchmark our current model, identifying driving behaviors predictive of accidents via machine learning, and building predictive models to inform business decisions. A successful candidate will be joining a world class group of statisticians, data scientists, mathematicians, and modelers on a mission to extract insights and support our strategy.
Essential Job Functions and Requirements:
Serves as key resource and Subject Matter Expert (SME) on cross functional, matrixed teams to solve highly complex work critical to the organization.
Works with Business and IT to ensure that our Big Data (AWS and or Microsoft Azure) platform is appropriately structured, accessed, protected, and utilized. Assists in developing governance and monitoring procedures for cloud computing.
Contributes to projects involving descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analyses leveraging a variety of statistical techniques (such as segmentation, regression, survival analysis, principal component analysis, scenario and sensitivity analysis, neural networks, and machine learning).
Collaborates with key internal and external partners in order to develop and deploy predictive modeling functionality.
Develops benchmarks and measures the performance of our algorithms and telematics products.
Strictly adheres to model governance processes through robust documentation and analyses.
Strong presentation skills. Must have the ability to present complex analyses/findings in a manner that influences senior executives, garners support for recommendations, and drives business decisions.
Assists leadership with training/coaching team members and actively shares expertise.
Master’s Degree or Ph.D. in Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, or another quantitative field that includes advanced coursework in statistics.
Advanced expertise using statistical language technologies (e.g. SAS) and deep experience in Hadoop technology and open source languages (Python, Spark, Keras, TensorFlow etc.).
Two or more years of telematics, UBI or connected technology experience.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with time-series sensor data (especially accelerometer/gyroscope), including data acquisition, processing, and applying machine learning models, as well as the ability to pull data from new sources and quickly evaluate efficacy.
Demonstrated skill with data mining, data validation, and scrubbing. Skilled at the ability to connect data from disparate sources.
Experience with AWS or similar cloud environment.
Experience with data wrangling very large, structured and unstructured data sources across distributed environments (Hive, Pig, Scala, etc.).
Passion for data driven answers and a “can do” attitude to execute and deliver results in a fast-paced work environment.
